Hello friends,

It's hard to believe that I'm working on my fifth book. I thoroughly enjoy the process of creating a world and populating it with characters. There is something very satisfying about the freedom to explore a fictional construct. Even so, there are necessary constraints.

As in life, characters are products of their environment with differing views depending on their perspective. Even the villains believe in their righteousness. Imagining how and why they came to that conclusion is an interesting exercise. Sometimes I wonder if what I've written is too unbelievable... and then I read a news feed. The saying "truth is stranger than fiction" comes to mind.

It's shocking how blind we can be to the things that differ from our chosen perspective. To discover the best approximation of the truth these days, it's necessary to gather information from multiple sources with divergent philosophies and political views. One way to get that is from sources outside of our own countries that aren't as invested in a particular narrative. It's exhausting, but doing so helps me gain a more balanced view of what's really happening in the world around me, minus the hyperbole.

Things are never so cut and dry as we want to believe. That's also what makes a story interesting, so I hope the exposure to other views will improve my writing. It's tempting to remain in the fantasy of my stories, but somehow I don't think my wife would appreciate that :)

Swathcomber Insurgency

I've been hard at work on book two of the States of Inversion series. The novel is 50% complete and things are moving along smoothly.

The political machinations continue as conflicts ramp up between the Luminaries, United Northern Collective and the Southern Realm. Now, the Swathcombers throw their hat into the ring as an unexpected contender with intrigues of their own — one more complication demanding Valtteri’s loyalty.

Now that I'm writing full time, I hope to have something in the hands of beta readers soon. Keep your eyes open for an opportunity to join the Advanced Reader team shortly after that. I'll also be posting some cover art in the near future. Stay tuned.
